Key Principle of the Efficient Running, Swimming, and Flying

چکیده

Empirical observations indicate striking similarities among locomotion in terrestrial animals, birds, and fish, but unifying physical grounds are lacking. When applied to efficient locomotion, the analytical mechanics principle of minimum action yields two patterns of mechanical similarity via two explicit spatiotemporal coherent states. In steady locomotory modes, the slow muscles determining maximal optimum speeds maintain universal intrinsic muscular pressure. Otherwise, maximal speeds are due to constant massdependent stiffness of fast muscles generating a uniform force field, exceeding gravitation. Being coherent in displacements, velocities and forces, the body appendages of animals are tuned to natural propagation frequency through the state-dependent elastic muscle moduli.

Unifying constructal theory for scale effects in running, swimming and flying.

Biologists have treated the view that fundamental differences exist between running, flying and swimming as evident, because the forms of locomotion and the animals are so different: limbs and wings vs body undulations, neutrally buoyant vs weighted bodies, etc. Here we show that all forms of locomotion can be described by a single physics theory. The theory is an invocation of the principle th...

The merits and implications of travel by swimming, flight and running for animals of different sizes.

Simple models are presented of the energetics of annual migration and of central place foraging, taking account of the speed and energy cost of the journeys. They are applied to insects, fish, birds and mammals of a wide range of sizes, which travel by flapping or soaring flight, by swimming or by running. It is shown that annual migrations of several thousand kilometres are unlikely to be bene...

Swimming training alleviated insulin resistance through Wnt3a/β-catenin signaling in type 2 diabetic rats

Objective(s): Increasing evidence suggests that regular physical exercise improves type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the potential beneficial effects of swimming on insulin resistance and lipid disorder in T2DM, and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Materials and Methods: Rats were fed with high fat diet and given a low dosage of Streptozotocin (STZ) to induce T2DM model, and su...

Efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy in reducing anxiety symptoms in Iranian individuals with flying phobia

Objective: Virtual reality exposure has recently emerged as an innovative tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of fear of flying. Fear of flying, a key component of which is anxiety, often remains uncured if no intervention procedures are employed. Not to point to the fact that about 10 to 25 percent of all the individuals experience anxiety and ‌that causes the individual entirely to avo...
